Lea Hawkins is a multidisciplinary artist and award winning photographer living in a studio shack in the misty hills of Kangaroo Valley, Yuin Nation, Australia. Lea is an early riser who works every day in some way on her art practice, has fallen desperatly in love with oil painting and pretty much resents anything that prevents her from doing this.
Lea has been selected in national competitions including twice as semi finalist in The HeadOn Portrait Prize and The Moran Photographic Portrait Prize. Twice as a finalist in the Canon Photo5 competition, and twice Highly Commended in Meroogal Women's Art Prize. Her work appears on music album and book covers for musicians and poets, both locally and internationally, as well as in national newspapers and magazines including Art Collector magazine. Her donated t-shirt design for Greenpeace was one of their best selling designs in the 90's, and images from her book and exhibition 'Shoalhaven' were requested for offices in Australia's Parliament House.
In August 2021 Lea finalized a two year project to create a non photographic body of work. Along the way expanding painting skills, experiments in sculpture, cyanotype printing, watercolour, revisiting drawing and ceramics and discovering a love of charcoal. Her first completed oil painting during this period was selected for the Lethbridge Gallery Small Works International Art Prize Salon, a charcoal piece selected as a finalist in Blackstone Gallery Works on Paper Prize, and a selection of images from Pond series won a bronze medal in the The Prix de la Photographie, exhibited in Paris 2021. Currently unrepresented so often seeking fun ways to self-represent and exhibit, recently gate crashing a local art festival with the Rogue Art Van and working on a new exhibition of oil paintings for March(ish) 2024 in the garden of Rythdale Cottage (Picton N.S.W)
